While the museum was founded in 1986, Pointe-du-Buisson was first home to the Société d'archéologie préhistorique du Québec (S.A.P.Q.) in 1965. The Society undertook archaeological digs, bringing Pointe-du-Buisson to be classified as a Quebec cultural and heritage site. In 1977, the Université de Montréal set up Quebec's first accredited Archaeological Field School on the Pointe. This technical course was given to students until 2000. In 2002, Pointe-du-Buisson was designated a Cultural Treasure by the Conseil de la Culture de la MRC de Beauharnois-Salaberry.
Recognized and supported since its founding by the municipality of Melocheville, and later by the City of Beauharnois, Pointe-du-Buisson is now defined as a museum institution, and receives regional recognition. In 2004, Pointe-du-Buisson's archaeological collection was repatriated to its reserve. A number of improvements were made, including the laboratory-reserve, which is now fully accessible to the public. Pointe-du-Buisson remains an important reference point for archaeological research. In 2015, the Museum celebrated 50 years of archaeological research!
